Johnson's Division Ewell's Corps and Anderson's Division Hill's Corps reaching the field about dark were not engaged Longstreet's Corps on the march. Stuart's Cavalry Division marching from Dover to Carlisle.

- July 2. McLaw's and Hood's Divisions Longstreet's Corps took the field about 3 P. M. and formed facing the Union left. An assault was made by the two divisions assisted by Anderson's Division Hill's Corps. The Union troops were dislodged from Emmitsburg Road and Peach Orchard engagement lasting until night losses heavy. Pickett's Division Longstreet's Corps on the march. Johnson's Division Ewell's Corps about dusk advanced to the assault of Culp's Hill in connection with Early's Division Ewell's Corps. Rodes' Division Ewell's Corps held position west of town not engaged. Heth's and Pender's Divisions Hill's Corps occupied Seminary Ridge facing Union line not engaged. Stuart's Cavalry on left flank of Confederate Army.

- July 3. Pickett's Division Longstreet's Corps reached the field in the morning. Assaulted the Union line on Cemetery Ridge about 3 P. M. assisted by Hill's Corps. The assault failed with great loss. An attack made on the left by Johnson's Division Ewell's Corps reinforced by three brigades of the Corps failed. Stuart's Cavalry Division engaged with 2d Union Cavalry Division and 2d Brigade 3d Cavalry Division on the Confederate left about 1 P. M.

- July 4. The Army took up the line of march during the night.

- July 1. McLaws' Division encamped about four miles from Gettysburg a little after dark. Hood's Division reached the same distance about 12 P. M. Law's Brigade on picket at New Guilford. Pickett's Division guarding trains at Chambersburg.

- July 2. Moved that portion of the command which was up to gain the Emmitsburg Road on Union left. Delayed attack until 3.30 P. M. when Law's Brigade joined from New Guilford. McLaws' Division in position facing Union left. About 4 P. M. Hood's Division moved further to the right and took position partially enveloping Union left. The batteries opened about 4 P. M. upon Union troops on Emmitsburg Road Hood's Division pressing on left and McLaws' in front the Union troops were dislodged. The engagement lasted until nearly night with heavy losses. The ground gained on the front was held. The left was withdrawn to first Union position at Peach Orchard.

- July 3. Pickett's Division reached the field at 9 A. M. Pickett's Heth's and part of Pender's Divisions were ordered to form column of assault on Union centre on Cemetery Hill. The batteries opened about 1 P. M. About 3 P. M. Pickett advanced in good order under a severe fire and was repulsed at the stone wall losing heavily McLaws' and Hood's Divisions were not seriously engaged during the day and night.

- July 4. The Corps took up the line of march during the night.

- July 1. The Division reached Marsh Creek four miles from Gettysburg after dark.

- July 2. The Division was placed in position facing the Union line on the Emmitsburg Road. About 4 P. M. the batteries opened on the position the Division pressing to the front and the Union troops retiring to the hill in rear. The battle continued until nearly night when a strong Union force met the supporting Division which was cooperating on the left and drove one brigade back and checked the support of the other brigade exposing the left. It was thought prudent not to push further until other troops of the Corps came up. The Division was withdrawn to the first position of Union troops resting at the Peach Orchard the conflict to be renewed in the morning when other orders were received.

- July 3. With the exception of severe skirmishing the Division was not engaged and after night disposition were made to withdraw.

- July 4. The Division took up the line of march during the night.

- July 1 McLaws's Division arrived late in the day and camped in this vicinity.

- July 2 In the morning McLaws's Division moved on the road towards Gettysburg but turning to the right half mile this side of Willoughby Run and crossing that stream lower down formed line as marked on the Battlefield. Pickett's Division marched by this place in the afternoon but followed the other road with some deflections to avoid being seen by the Union Signal Corps and crossing Willoughby Run lay that night in the west side of Spangler's Woods.

Kershaw's Brigade

Brigadier General Joseph B. Kershaw's South Carolina Brigade of McLaw's Division, ordered on the afternoon of July 2, 1863, to attack the Union battle line north and east of the Rose Farm, 100 yards eastward, crossed the Emmitsburg Road in this area. By nightfall their attack, joined with those of other Confederate brigades, had forced the Union troops from the Peach Prchard and Wheatfield. Late on July 3 the brigade withdrew and went into position in the woods a quarter mile west.

Erected by "Project Southland" in cooperation with the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association 1970.

Participated also in the general advance late in the evening by which the Union forces were forced out of the Wheatfield and across Plum Run Valley. Brig Gen. Paul J. Semmes fell mortally wounded in the ravine near the Loop. 

- July 3. During the afternoon Anderson's Brigade being withdrawn for duty elsewhere the Brigade was left in the occupancy of the woodland south of the Wheatfield. At 1 P. M. under orders it resumed its original position near here.

- July 4. About midnight began the march to Hagerstown Md.

Assailed there by a strong body of fresh troops and receiving at the same moment an order to withdraw the Brigade fell back at sunset to the grove west of the Wheatfield.

- July 3. One regiment was left on outpost duty in that grove. The others supported artillery on Peach Orchard Ridge. All withdrew late in the afternoon.

- July 4. In line here all day. At midnight began march to Hagerstown.

Assailed by Union reinforcements and receiving orders to withdraw the Brigade fell back at sunset to the cover of the woods west of the Wheatfield.

- July 3. The Napoleons remained here. The two rifles with the two rifles of Fraser's Battery took position at 5 A. M. under CaPart Manly on crest beyond Emmitsburg Road north of Peach Orchard were engaged in the great cannonade and after Longstreet's assault aided in checking pursuit. Continued firing at intervals until 7.30 P. M. Then resumed this position.

- July 4. At 10 A. M. aided in checking an advance of three regiments. After night withdrew from the field.

- July 2. Took position here 3.30 P. M. and opened fire on Peach Orchard and the Union batteries east of it. At 4 P. M. the Rifles were silenced by loss of men. The fire of the Parrotts continued until Peach Orchard was taken.

- July 3. The Parrotts were moved to crest north of Peach Orchard in main artillery line took part in the great cannonade aided in checking pursuit after Longstreet's assault and retired from front after dark. The Rifles were placed under command of Captain Manly of the N. C. Artillery and served by his men in position with his own Rifles.

- July 4. In position near here. After night withdrew from the field. Their ammunition was nearly exhausted.

- July 4. In position near here. One Napoleon aided in checking a hostile advance. All withdrew from the field at night.

M. moved forward to assault across the field about three fourths of a mile under severe fire losing many officers and men only a few reaching the salient. The Division being separated from its support on the right and left and the assault having failed returned to its former position on the ridge.

- July 3. In the forenoon formed line on Kemper's left in the field east of the woods. At the cessation of the cannonade advanced and took part in Longstreet's assault on the Union position in the vicinity of the Angle. This advance was made in good order under a storm of shells and grape and a deadly fire of musketry after passing the Emmitsburg Road. The lines were much broken in crossing the post and rail fences on both sides of that road but with shattered ranks the Brigade pushed on and took part in the final struggle at the Angle. Gen. R. B. Garnett fell dead from his saddle in front of the stone wall.

- July 4. Spent the day in reorganization and during the night began the march to Hagerstown.

Exposed to a severe fire of artillery and vigorously assailed beyond the Emmitsburg Road by infantry on the right flank with ranks thinned and much disorganized by its losses especially of officers it pressed on against the Union line at the stone wall where after a fierce encounter the struggle ended. Gen. J. L. Kemper fell wounded in front of the stone wall.

- July 4. Spent the day in reorganization and during the night began the march to Hagerstown.

When the cannonade ceased advanced to support Kemper's and Garnett's Brigades forming the right of Longstreet's Corps. Its losses being less at first than those of the other brigades it passed the Emmitsburg Road in compact ranks and as the front line was going to pieces near the stone wall pushed forward and many of its men and some from other commands responding to the call and following Gen. L. A. Armistead sprang over the wall into the Angle and continued the desperate struggle until he fell mortally wounded beyond the stone wall.

- July 4. Spent the day in reorganization and during the night began the march to Hagerstown.

- July 3. Advanced to the front about daybreak. Later in the morning took position on the crest of ridge west of Emmitsburg Road and near the Roger's House. Drove back with a dozen well directed rounds a strong line of skirmishers whose fire wounded a few men and horses. Bore a conspicuous part in the cannonade preceding Longstreet's assault. But its ammunition being exhausted about the time the assault began and repeated efforts to obtain a fresh supply proving fruitless the Battery was withdrawn.

- July 4. In line of battle all day with the left wing of McLaws' Division. Marched about sunset to Black Horse Tavern.

- July 1. On the march to Gettysburg. Encamped about four miles from the field with the exception of Law's Brigade left on picket at New Guilford.

- July 2. Law's Brigade joined from New Guilford about noon. The Division was formed on extreme right of the Army and then directed to drive in and envelop the Union left. About 4 P. M. the batteries opened and soon after the Division moved forward. After a severe struggle the Union line retired to the ridge in rear. The ground fought over was obstructed by stone fences and very difficult. The movement was partially successful the battle continuing until nearly dark. The advance gained was held.

- July 3. Occupied the ground gained and with the exception of resisting a Cavalry charge and heavy skirmishing was not engaged.

- July 4. The Division took up the line of march during the night.

Advanced at once against the Union Position on Little Round Top. The Regiment encountered the 83d Penna. and right wing of the 20th Maine. The conflict lasted until night-fall.

- July 3. Occupied breastwork on western slope of Round Top with firing on skirmish line. At 5 p.m. intercepted near the Slyder house and aided in repulsing the Union Cavalry under Brig.-Gen. Farnsworth and pursued it into the forest south of the valley. About 11 p.m. the regiment under orders resumed position near here and lay inactive the next day and night.

- July 5. About 5 a.m. began the march to Hagerstown.

Present officers and men about 275. Killed and wounded 87.

- July 3. At 2 A. M. the 1st Texas and 3d Arkansas were moved to the right and joined the 4th and 5th Texas on the northwest spur of Big Round Top. Three regiments occupied the breastworks there all day skirmishing hotly with Union sharpshooters. Early in the day the 1st Texas was sent to confront the Union Cavalry threatening the right flank. After night the Brigade took position near here.

- July 5. About 5 A. M. began the march to Hagerstown Md.
